Few things say Colorado autumn like a Sunday that starts with charcoal smoke and ends with a hoarse voice. This is ColoFandom's fan guide to Denver Broncos game day: the building, the rituals, the neighborhoods and how to find your people.
The Home Building
Empower Field at Mile High sits just west of downtown Denver, close to the Platte River corridor and the Auraria area. It is a big, open bowl, and on a cold afternoon the wind and the sun both matter. Many fans arrive by light rail or rideshare to skip the parking puzzle, while others drive in early to claim lot space.
The altitude is part of the identity. You are standing a mile above sea level, so drink water, go easy on the first round and layer up. Weather can swing from sunny and mild to snow squalls in a single afternoon. Hours, entry rules, offers and capacity change from game to game, so always confirm details with the venue and the team before you head out.
Game-Day Rituals & Traditions
The Orange Crush name is a Broncos touchstone, and fans still wear orange head to toe. The South Stands are famous for being the loudest, most committed corner of the stadium, and a lot of fans plan their whole day around getting there. Super Bowl 50 remains a proud chapter in the franchise's story, and you will hear it referenced in lots and bars alike.
The rhythm of the day is mostly informal:
- Early arrival to set up a tailgate and meet the neighbors.
- A walk toward the stadium as the crowd thickens.
- Standing, shouting and sharing a seat-back chat with the row behind you.
- A post-game wind-down, win or lose, back at the lot or in a neighborhood spot.
The stadium mascot Miles and the live horse tradition are part of the show, but the real tradition is the fans themselves.
Where Fans Gather
The South Lot is the best-known tailgate territory for Broncos faithful, and the surrounding lots fill with grills, flags and folding chairs. Lot rules, permits and closing times are set by the venue, so check them before you pack the truck. Be a good neighbor: keep music reasonable, clean up and never leave a fire unattended.
Away from the stadium, fans spread across downtown Denver, the Highlands and the sports-bar corridors along the nearby neighborhoods. Sports bars across the metro host Sunday crowds, and many families keep a living-room tradition for road games. If you are drinking, plan a designated driver, use transit or book a ride. Propane and charcoal need respect: keep grills level, away from vehicles and tents, and have water or an extinguisher handy.
Traveling to the Game
I-25 and I-70 funnel a lot of traffic toward Denver on game days, so build in buffer time if you are coming from the mountains or the Springs. Transit and carpools make the day calmer, and walking the last stretch is part of the build-up. Bring layers, sunscreen for early season and hand warmers for December.

- Chapters: The Denver Metro (Central 5280) chapter is the home base for Broncos fans, with a road-trip habit for out-of-town games.
- Tailgate guides: Read The Definitive South Lot Tailgate and our cold-weather tailgating guide before you fire up the smoker.
We are an early community hub, so most of this runs on RSVP and interest lists rather than anything automated. Questions or ideas? Write to [email protected].
