Colorado Avalanche

Burgundy-and-blue hockey culture, parade memories and the loudest rink nights in the Rockies.

Hockey in the mountains sounds like a contradiction until you spend a night with Avalanche fans. Burgundy and blue jerseys, a roaring building and a long memory for Cup parades: here is ColoFandom's guide to the Avs fan experience.

The Home Building

The Avalanche play at Ball Arena on the edge of downtown Denver, a short trip from Union Station and the LoDo neighborhood. Light rail, buses and rideshare make car-free arrival easy, and parking in the area fills up quickly on busy nights, so build in extra time. The same building hosts the Nuggets, so the venue is a year-round sports hub.

Colorado's thin air and dry winter weather mean you should hydrate before and during the game, and dress for the walk in. Hours, entry rules, offers and capacity change from game to game, so always confirm details with the venue and the team before you head out.

Game-Day Rituals & Traditions

Avalanche fans love a loud, early start. The building tends to be at full volume when the puck drops, and goal celebrations are famously energetic. Jerseys from different eras sit side by side in the stands.

The city's two Stanley Cup parades, in 2001 and 2022, are a shared point of pride, and many fans bring that history to the rink as a ritual of its own. You will see fans carrying keepsakes, wearing old jerseys and telling the story to anyone who asks.

  • Arrive early for warmups and the pre-game build-up.
  • Stand and cheer when the building rises.
  • Stay for the post-game scene, win or lose.
  • Trade stories with fans from the other side of the arena.

Where Fans Gather

Downtown Denver is the main hub: LoDo, the area around Union Station and the bar blocks near the arena fill before faceoff. The ballpark district and nearby sports bars offer big-screen options when you would rather watch with a crowd than in a seat. Across the metro, neighborhood pubs host road-game crowds.

If you are in Boulder, Fort Collins or the mountain towns, local bars with hockey on the screens are easy to find. Ask the venue about sound, seating and hours before you commit a group.

Playing It Smart

Hockey nights can run long. Pace your drinks, line up a designated driver or a ride, and keep an eye on the weather if you are heading back up I-70. Be kind to visiting fans; a good-natured rivalry makes the building louder, not meaner.

How to Plug In With ColoFandom

ColoFandom is an unofficial, independent fan community. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by the Colorado Avalanche, their league or their venue, and we do not offer tickets, perks or insider access. What we do offer is company.

  • Watch parties: Join a pre-game meetup or road-game watch party through our interest list.
  • Chapters: The Denver Metro chapter is home to most Avs conversation, and fans in Fort Collins, Boulder and the mountain towns have their own groups.
  • Tailgate guides: Our Avalanche Ice Reports show is launching soon, a fan's notes on tempo, lines and Ball Arena atmosphere.

We are an early community hub, so most of this runs on RSVP and interest lists rather than anything automated. Questions or ideas? Write to [email protected].
