There is no one who does not know the biggest star of the Internet: MrBeast.
MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has amassed a massive online audience of more than 338 million YouTube subscribers, making him the top creator on the platform and earning millions of dollars in revenue, according to Business Insider.
MrBeast posted his first video in 2012 and has dozens of viral videos, including a recreation of Netflix’s “Squid Games” that has more than 670 million views. He runs several YouTube channels, from MrBeast Gaming to channels dubbed in other languages like Spanish, French, Russian, and Arabic.
Donaldson makes money through brand sponsorships, YouTube ad revenue, merchandise, content licensing, publishing…Documents filed in court in October revealed 163 pages of MrBeast’s pitches for many famous brands, including Ford, CarMax and Walmart.
Donaldson’s massive business empire also includes a chocolate and snack brand called Feastables, a charitable organization called Beast Philanthropy, and a partnership with Amazon Prime for a reality TV series called “Beast Games.”
YouTube star MrBeast is on track to generate $700 million in revenue this year. The projected 2024 earnings would be roughly three times the $223 million Donaldson’s businesses generated last year.
“Each video brings in a few million dollars in ad revenue, a few million dollars in brand deals,” Donaldson told Time, candidly revealing that brands pay between $2.5 million and $3 million for a mention in a video.
However, the money did not go into Donaldson’s bank account and even if it did, the 25-year-old would not have access to it.
“I don’t have access to any of my bank accounts,” he said. “I have a CFO and a bunch of other people supporting me, but my mom is the only one who has access to my bank accounts.”
According to CNBC, the proceeds will be used to grow the brand and its huge audience. “I reinvested everything in the belief that we would be successful. You could even say it was stupid. But, we were really successful,” he said.
Vince Miller, a lecturer in culture and sociology at the University of Kent in England, says MrBeast’s formula for success includes several elements: grassroots charm and enthusiasm, high-octane action sequences and wads of money thrown around like confetti.
Additionally, Mr. Miller argues that Donaldson’s popularity also stems from his unique form of philanthropy. He convinces viewers that by watching his videos, they are participating in a form of ethical consumerism.
“The fact that he recycles a large portion of his earnings into even bigger and more spectacular prizes for his subsequent videos is one of the secrets to his success. He often uses the earnings from previous videos to outshine himself in subsequent videos,” Miller commented.
In previous interviews, Donaldson said he studied YouTube’s recommendation algorithm and other creators to figure out what makes his videos popular. The way Donaldson’s videos are run in contests also encourages viewers to stick around to find out the results, which results in more ad revenue for both him and YouTube.
Donaldson told the press that he currently lives in Greenville, North Carolina. He spends most of his time at the company’s warehouse and only goes home when his girlfriend visits.
“When my girlfriend comes to town, I go home. It’s much easier to stay at the company because then I don’t have to drive as much,” he said.
With plans to continue expanding his empire, MrBeast admits that he could eventually reap financial rewards.
“I’m not naive, maybe one day I will be rich. But right now, no matter how much we make, we reinvest it,” the male YouTuber shared.
Of course, Donaldson doesn’t live that frugally. According to Time, the popular content creator has a chef, a personal trainer, and currently lives in a 3,000-square-foot home that cost $320,000.
